Academy Reveals Why Cameron Boyce & Luke Perry Were Excluded From Oscars ‘In Memoriam’

The 2020 Oscars on Sunday night (Feb. 9) received some backlash for its “In Memoriam” segment, which excluded late actors Cameron Boyce and Luke Perry.

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences released a statement to Us Weekly on Tuesday (Feb. 11), explaining why the two were left off the list. “The Academy receives hundreds of requests to include loved ones and industry colleagues in the Oscars ‘In Memoriam’ segment,” the statement read. “An executive committee representing every branch considers the list and makes selections for the telecast based on limited available time. All the submissions are included on Oscar.com.”

Both actors died too soon this past year. Boyce was only 20 years old when he died in July from a seizure caused by epilepsy. Perry died a few months earlier in March, after suffering a stroke at 52 years old.

The “In Memoriam” video segment, which was accompanied by Billie Eilish singing The Beatles’ “Yesterday,” paid tribute to Oscar-winner Kobe Bryant and screen legend Kirk Douglas, among others.
