To honor the 40th anniversary of Prince’s eponymous second album, the Prince Estate and Warner Records partnered to release a previously unheard acoustic demo of “I Feel For You.”
The stripped-down version of the song was released to streaming services on Friday (Oct. 18) and will also be available for purchase as a limited-run 7″ vinyl single.
The two-track single — featuring the “I Feel For You” demo version on side A and the original studio version on side B — is available for purchase over the next seven days exclusively at prince.com.
“I Feel For You” was originally released by Prince in 1979, but later became a hit for Chaka Khan and the title track of her 1984 album.
Prince’s stripped-down demo version was recorded in the winter of 1978-1979 and recently discovered on a cassette tape stored in the late artist’s vault.
“I was blown away,” Prince vault archivist Michael Howe said in a statement. “Here is 20-year-old Prince thinking aloud, feeling his way through the song. You hear his incredible talent shining through on acoustic guitar, which is not something he typically showcased, and his guide vocal is astonishingly great.”
