Kelly Clarkson Refuses to Surrender In Cover of Dido’s ‘White Flag’

Unlike with her take of LeAnn Rimes’ “Blue,” Kelly Clarkson refuses to give up on love in her latest Kellyoke cover. Backed by her band Y’all, the singer and talk show host covered Dido’s hit single “White Flag” Monday (April 12).

Clarkson starts off soft before gradually stretching her vocals as the song becomes more grand. The stage lights turn from gold to silver as she effortlessly glides through the cover, asserting, “I will go down with ship/ And I won’t put my hands up and surrender/ There will be no white flag above my door/ I’m in love and always will be.”

“White Flag” was the lead single off of Dido’s 2003 album Life For Rent. In a 2013 interview with HuffPost Live, the English singer-songwriter said the tune is about her breakup from her ex-fiancé, and that she never gets tired of singing it. “White Flag” was also a hit in the U.K., and was the second best-selling single in the country at the time. It is considered to be one of Dido’s signature songs.
