Mariah Carey & Busta Rhymes Reconnect in Emotional ‘Where I Belong’ Video

Busta Rhymes reunites with his “I Know What You Want” co-star Mariah Carey in the cinematic video for their new duet, “Where I Belong.” The clip, which intersperses performance clips of the dynamic duo singing the song’s wistful hook with graphic novel-style animated clips of ninjas battling, is a sequel of sorts to the visual for the pair’s beloved 2002 hit “Want.”

“I live for the ‘nostalgia’ of this new collaboration with my friend, the iconic Busta!!!!,” Carey tweeted on Thursday (April 15) to hype the clip that dropped last week for the song from Rhymes’ 2020 album, Extinction Level Event 2: The Wrath of God. “The past is an animal that chases you forever,” Rhymes says ominously over rain-drenched, animated panels of a love lost that flash nearly two decades forward as Trippie Redd drops in to connect with Bus and continue the story line from their “I Got You” video.

“The past chases you, until it catches you,” Rhymes laments in the visual that also picks up where the sensual “What You Want” clip left off back in the George W. Bush era, complete with a flashback to that video’s cartoon panel subplot and shots of Rhymes and Carey playfully circling each other as she sings the ballad’s alluring hook. Another Easter egg features La’Shonte “Tae” Heckard returning as Rhymes’ paramour, who was kidnapped in the “What You Want” storyline and rescued by Rhymes and actor Michael Jai White, with that latter also reprising his role.

But mostly it’s about Carey — in a shiny liquid leather burgundy mini-dress — circling around a black-clad Busta sharing the spotlight as they wind around each other in what looks like a parking garage. Oh and Busta and Jai White kick some martial arts moves before finding out that Heckard may not have been as imperiled as they thought, leading to the reveal of a dark secret.
