The Weeknd’s First NFT Drop Will Feature New Music and Limited-Edition Artwork

The Weeknd is getting into the NFT game this weekend, with his first foray into the red-hot Non-fungible token crypto game.

“Excited to announce that my first NFT drop is taking place on Saturday (March 3) at 2:00 pm EST on @niftygateway,” the singer tweeted on Wednesday. “The collection will feature new music and limited edition art. I developed the artwork with Strange Loop Studios.”

A murky 15-second teaser video — consisting of images of the singer’s head embedded in rock and what looked like a stony black heart — didn’t reveal much about the sale via Niftygateway, whose upcoming schedule also includes NFT drops from Calvin Harris, Mike Shinoda, Ferry Corsten and Illenium.

According to a statement announcing the NFT drop first reported by Variety, the campaign will kick off with an open edition flash sale of three distinct visual pieces of art, each accompanied by a filtered snippet of an unnamed new song. An unlimited amount of these works will be available for a limited time, followed by a 24-hour auction of “an exclusive 1-of-1 piece of art” tracked by a second, full new song, which will be unfiltered. The winner of the second auction will have an exclusive on the song, which will not be released on any other platforms in the future.

“Blockchain is democratizing an industry that has historically been kept shut by the gatekeepers. I’ve always been looking for ways to innovate for fans and shift this archaic music biz and seeing NFT’s allowing creators to be seen and heard more than ever before on their terms is profoundly exciting,” said the Weeknd in a statement. “I intend to contribute to this movement and can see that very soon it will be weaved into the music industry’s mechanics.”
