NEW EMOJIS ARE ON THE WAY

he Unicode Consortium has finally released the new emojis set to drop in 2020 for iOS and Android users. The emoji list for 2020 is complete with 117 emojis making the final cut for release. As always, there is a wide variety of new emojis with this latest drop. From Bubble Tea to Woolly Mammoth, there’s something here for everyone to enjoy.

This update is most inclusive yet. There will now be emojis of the trans flag, a gender-inclusive person in a tuxedo, a gender-neutral person or a man in a wedding veil and gender-inclusive alternatives to Santa Claus and Mrs. Claus named Mx. Claus. “This addition is part of an ongoing effort to make more consistent set of gender options across the board, and expands upon the 138 new gender-neutral emojis added in late 2019 as part of Emoji 12.1.,” according to Emojipedia.

Google and Microsoft have lead the charge to make emojis more diverse and inclusive over the past few years. Both companies backed the proposal, writing in a statement: “We believe that adding an emoji illustrative to our life experiences isn’t just about creating technology that should be accessible to everyone — it’s about fostering a culture that is inclusive of users around the world.”

You can view the entire list of new emojis on Emojipedia. Though the new emojis have been approved by the Unicode Consortium, it will still take some time for them to show up on your mobile devices. Apple and Google still have to design their own versions of each emoji before they become available.
